Cantilever Sewing Box

Hello & Welcome. Before I start with instructions I would first like to acknowledge a fellow Stampin' Up! Demonstrator by the name of Amanda Bates from The Craft Spa in the U.K. I follow this talented lady's work and saw this idea on her blog. 

 

Just a few things to note about my box 

•  I designed it to fit cards I make which are half an A4. (Australian paper size which makes two cards @ 10.5cm 14.85cm)
• If you intend on filling it with cards, stationary, envelopes etc, you may want to reinforce the entire bottom box and I would advise not lifting a full basket by the handles - card stock can only hold so much. I would recommend the crate style handle secured to the bottom with a strong adhesive over the handles and struts.
• You will need a piece of 11" x 15" Cardstock for the base. And if making the crate handle a piece that measures 5.75" x 15.5". These are an odd shape which I obtained by cutting down a large poster size piece of CS. (To reinforce glue two pieces together and then cut to size.)

 To make this tutorial I made another Cantilever Sewing Box this time with the crate handle - pictured below

STEP 1. Base Box

Take a sheet of card stock 11" x 15" 

on the 11" side score at 2.5" and 8.5"

on the 15" side score at 2.5" and 12.5"

Cut wedges in tabs and make box

 

 

STEP 2. Small Boxes (make two)

Cardstock 10" x 9" (times two)

on 10" side score at 2" and 8"

on 9" side score at 2" and 7"

Cut wedges in tabs and make box. 

REPEAT - so you have two identical boxes

 

STEP 3. Lids for Base Box

Cardstock 7.5" x 7.5" (times two)

On one side score at 2.5" and 3.5"

Turn 90 degrees and score at 0.75" and 6.75"

Cut away excess as shown in picture below. Cut wedges and round edges of flaps as shown

 

REPEAT - so you have two lids for the bottom box. Attach lids to bottom box with tombow (the lids really only fit one way)

 

STEP 4. Lids for Top Boxes

Cardstock 7.5" x7.5" (times two)

On one side score at 2" and 7"

Rotate Cardstock 90 degrees and score at 0.75" and 6.75". Cut away area as shown below in picture, cut wedges and round corners on flaps. Glue two flaps to make half box with long flap on one side.

 

REPEAT - so you have two lids one for each top box

 

To adhere put lid on box and then glue large flap to side of box.

 

STEP 5. Crate Handle (Skip this STEP if using decorative handles in STEP 7)

Cardstock 15.5" x 5.75"

On the 15.5" side score at 1" and 6.75" and 14.5"

Fold in half and glue excluding below the bottom score line/flaps. Cut oval for handle. When you are ready to attach, glue bottom flaps to bottom of base box. Attach bottom box lids to side of base box.

 

STEP 6. Struts (you will need brads for this step)

Cardstock 8 pieces that measure 0.75" x 5.25"

Glue two pieces together so you have four struts. Use corner rounder and round all four edges. Make a hole 0.75" from each end.

This is what you should have so far.

 

To place struts I suggest using a ruler and pencil to measure before making holes. Take base box with long side facing you make a hole 1.5" up from bottom and 1" in from edge.With smaller boxes short side facing you make a hole 1.25" up from bottom and 0.75" in from side. Use brads to connect struts. Punch or die cut a shape to cover brad. I made the handle with 2 pieces of 1" x 16.2" scored at 5.1" and 11.2"

 

Before inserting brads I suggest you decorate the outside, as attaching anything once struts are installed will be difficult.

 

I stamped the interiors and used DSP for the exterior. I also added a few heat embossed vellum flowers and a few pearls. Ribbon loops could be attached to the lids for easy opening and closing or small knobs. 

STEP 7. Decorative Handles (Do not lift box with these handles)

Cardstock 2 pieces 16.2" x 1"

Score at 5.1"and 11.2"

Adhere one Handle to one side of top box brad - REPEAT on other side.  See picture below.
